“So tell me about Robbie,” Kevin said in his easygoing manner when they’d settled themselves on the padded wooden benches that acted as patio chairs. “Has he told you why he’s here?”

“Something bad happened to make him very sad, but he says I’m too young to understand, and that he’s just here to make sure nothing bad happens to me.”

Kevin was reminded of Matthew saying something similar to him all those years ago. “Does he say what kind of bad things could happen?”

“No, but when the noises start and things start to fly about, he comes and stops it. He shouts at it and it goes away.”

“But not soon enough,” Jamie remarked wryly. “Tell him to come before the police are called next time.”

Kevin smiled. “Somehow, I don’t think whatever or whoever is causing the upheaval cares about the police too much.” He took Laura’s small hand in his much larger one. “Are you frightened by the noise?”

“I was the first time, until Robbie came, but now I know he’ll come to stop it, so I just cover my head with the quilt and wait.”

“And does he stay after the noises stop?”

“Sometimes.” Laura smiled. “It’s funny, he talks to me but his mouth doesn’t move…”

“Like you hear his voice inside your head?”

“Yes. I wanted to hold his hand once, but he told me I couldn’t touch him. He said he’d like to hug me, but he couldn’t.”

A low vibration under their feet had Jamie looking anxiously at Kevin. “What’s that?”

“It’s not Robbie,” Laura said firmly. “He doesn’t do things like that—it’s the other man.”

“The other man?”

“I’ve never seen him, but Robbie doesn’t like him. He tells him to go away and stop trying to frighten me and Grandma.”

The vibration grew stronger; strong enough to knock over a couple of potted plants. The air around them seemed to hum with an angry buzz as if created by the wings of a thousand bees. Kevin opened his mind, reaching out to whatever entity surrounded them at that moment. He gasped as he encountered a dark jumble of half-formed malicious thoughts, recriminations, threats, then a calmer presence; calmer but powerful enough to force the dark entity away. The vibration weakened, the air settled, and the breath Kevin had been holding escaped from his lips in a rush of relief.

“You all right Kevin?” Jamie asked, coming to sit by him. “You’ve gone pale.”

“I’m fine.” Kevin gazed at Laura’s upturned face. “Did you feel any of that?”

She shook her head but looked back at him, worry etching a small frown on her delicate features.

“Feel any of what?” Jamie touched Kevin’s arm.

“There was a presence here—two actually. One malignant, the other—and I’d have to surmise it was Robbie—quite powerful, but in a protective way.” He smiled at Laura. “You have a good friend in Robbie, Laura. Now we just have to find out what it’s all about…”
